Ready-to-Wear is Ready-to-Die

Brooklyn, NY (ContentDesk) August 4, 2005 -- Where's an edgy girl with a tiny waist and wide hips to find clothing that fits her body and her sense of style? That's exactly the question that prompted Erika Rier, owner of Mellifluous Couture, to launch her new customized line of clothing. Based on the notion that most women have "uncommon" proportions, at least according to today's Ready-to-Wear standard sizing, Rier launched Mellifluous Couture and created its Build-a-Dress, Construct-a-Skirt and Style-a-Shirt lines. According to Rier, the problem women are facing today is two-fold?they can't find clothing that fits their body precisely, nor can they find clothing that is truly unique to their sense of style. Rier's clients have been improvising for years, buying only shirts in one store, only pants in another; removing flowers and adding sashes; having hems taken in and hems let out?in short, trying in some small way to make their clothing their own. To further complicate matters, the so-called "standard" system of measurement has been open to a bit of interpretation as of late.

Rier challenges a woman to buy the same size pair of pants from both French Connection and Ann Taylor, "The discrepancy in standard sizing is just truly baffling," explains Rier. If she's baffled, other women are frustrated, confused and even embarrassed. As one client explained to Rier, "If I'm a size 4 in one store, it stands to reason that I'd be a size 4 in another, right? So why do some 4's fit perfectly while others can't make it over my knee? There's nothing worse than responding to the saleslady's 'how's everything going in there?' with a 'can I try these in a size 12?' " Rier might have anticipated the needs of other women, but the idea for Mellifluous Couture started as a very personal one. "I've always been bigger than the average fashionista. After I had my daughter, though, I realized that if I weren't a designer I'd be doomed to a closet full of ill-fitting mediocrity! Once I started doing special orders, I very quickly started realizing that no one I measured fit into a standardized size mold.

It seemed absolutely imperative to provide this kind of service.
As far as I'm concerned, Ready-to-Wear standard sized clothing is an experiment which has failed," Rier explains.Mellifluous Couture's lines cater to the individuality of sizes and aesthetics, allowing women to choose an article of clothing, select a style, specify their exact measurements (bust, waist, hip and length) and select the fabrics and trims that appeal to them. For Rier, Mellifluous Couture is about more than giving women clothing that truly fits their bodies and personalities, it's about giving them the power to redefine the notion of "standard."Mellifluous Couture custom couture is available online, along with an eclectic assortment of handbags and accessories. All clothing is handmade and personally draped to create the best fit. Customers can choose from thirteen dress styles, ten skirt styles and eight shirt styles; as well as over fifteen fabrics of varied patterns, textures and colors.

Black - Always Fashionable When Done Right

Fashion is changing.
But one thing is should be constant - black.
Nothing is boring about the newest black fashions in New York and Paris. This is a great tip, and professionals know how to make models look brilliant in black.

Black is the basis for two important looks, according to Sally Singer, Vogue's fashion news director.

"The interesting thing about black this season is that it's either used as a pop art basic against white, a '60s look that shows the graphic nature of black and white. (Christian) Dior did it well. ... Or, you see a mixing of textures and tones of black. Black velvet, black gauze, black silk or viscose.

... There's varying amounts of light that goes through it to make the black sometimes look gray, blueish or brownish," she says.

Another reason black is great for fashion, is its mess with fantastic jewelry. Style.com's executive fashion director Candy Pratts Price "You could wear a black beaded necklace...
